New tiles, and no bathroom

Our contractor informed us yesterday that the bathroom would be taken out today. What we're most excited about is the removal of the gharish old tub, which sits directly in front of one's pathway upon entering the bathroom. Although this is the start of no indoor plumbing for a good month, we can't wait to see what it looks like with everything ripped out!

I went back to the tile store in Brooklyn today, which we have used for all of our bathroom tile purchases to date (namely the subway tiles for the walls) and picked up our marble basketweave flooring and matching border. It's owned and run by a bunch of Italian Brooklynites, who treated me to an excellent cup of espresso while I was waiting for the tiles. Needless to say, we will use them again: it's hard to come by good coffee and good tile prices in the same place!

No More Walls!

We had a pleasant surprise this evening when we visited and found the major interior walls gone! Earlier this morning we witnessed the first hole being punched in the living room wall and the first glimpse of light from the bedroom window. Here is the view from the foyer...

Not a pretty sight but at least now we have a good reason not be living here! Some more photos are posted here: http://picasaweb.google.com/gfgiles/315W106thRenovation

So far, there haven't been any major surprises in the walls: the old electrical riser wiring as well as some newer electrical supply lines were in the foyer wall and will need to be re-routed. The exposed copper piping for the apartment that makes several turns before going to the apartment above will need to be discussed...

Perhaps the bathtub will come out tomorrow!

Take 2....

So here's our first delay since demolition was "scheduled": we've been waiting on the last bits of insurance and permits to float in. So finally they did, and this afternoon we got the official go-ahead from the management. We'll meet the contractor in the apartment tomorrow, and we're not holding our breath on this...but maybe (just maybe) a wall or a bathtub will be gone by the end of the day!

Tonight we celebrated by treating ourselves to sorbet, which tastes quite amazing when there's no air conditioning and it feels like hot pea soup everywhere.
