Monday - 8/17/09

Lots to report today!

The plumbing inspection went well this morning all the pipes passed! Here is the new supply, vents, and waste piping for the sink and toilet.

And here is the rough-in for the shower...

Skim-coating continues on the living room, bedroom, hallway, and kitchen and the insulation on the bedroom partition was installed today.

On Friday the began leveling the subfloor throughout the apartment so that it will all be one level.

The picture below shows the insulation in the new partition. Notice the big pile of boards in the foreground of the photo below, that is our new maple flooring.

The framing that was exposed last Wednesday (see post for 8/12/09) was covered in drywall today and the intercom wiring was concealed in the center column in the photo below.

Finally, here is a sample of the unfinished 4" maple flooring. It will be even more beautiful when it is sanded and coated!

Thursday/Friday - 8/13/09-8/14/09

On Thursday we got confirmation of the initial DOB plumbing inspection for the following Monday. This is the initial inspection before all the pipes are covered by plaster and tiles...a very important step to allow bathroom walls and floors to be completed.

The toilet and flush valve arrived on Thursday! The idea that there may be a functioning bathroom in our future is quite exciting. In the meantime, there is wiring, piping, and more plastering to be done...

As of Friday morning the electrician was done with all his rough-in wiring and the plumber had installed all the new waste and supply lines. Let's hope the inspection goes well on Monday.

Wednesday - 8/12/09

Today framing, plastering, drywall, wiring, and plumbing work continued. Below is the framing that will conceal the electrical and communications wiring. The study will be on the right. Notice the vertical pipe in the middle of the study door...this is the intercom wiring for all the apartments above us! There's no way we're touching that! We'll have to conceal it somehow...

The soundproofing and drywall were also installed on the wall that we share with the adjacent apartment.

The new hallway is beginning to take place! This is the view looking from the kitchen. The french doors for the bedroom will be on the right.

The piping for the new shower is installed!

We're back after a brief hiatus!

Pipes and Wires

On Monday the plumber continued removing old unused piping in the bathroom and kitchen and the electrician also started his work. In this picture you can see the channeling and new wiring in the foyer.

The electrician also started wiring the new partition with power, cable, Ethernet and phone…

Finally, they wired two new AC outlets over by the windows by running the power conduits under the floor joists.

Plumbing demo

Last Friday the plumber started ripping out the old piping in the bathroom to make way for the new shower drain and new hot and cold water supply lines.

He also started preparing for the new radiator in the bedroom.

Meanwhile, the skim coating continues and the walls and ceilings are beginning to get smoother and whiter!

Like the new color?

When we came to look at the apartment on Monday, we hadn't expected to find the wall painted hot pink! What do you think? Maybe we should keep it for our living room color...

This does have a practical application: the paint acts as an adhesive over parts of the wall that have layers of old paint on them, so that the new skim coat layers will stick. As you can see, they already started skim coating (this work was done on Tuesday) on the ceiling and the bedroom walls!

We looked at flooring yesterday, and are in the process of choosing kind of wood (probably either maple or oak, but definitely unfinished hardwood) and how wide we want the planks to be. We have to decide quickly, because they may install a new floor in a couple weeks.

And for last, this piece of news just in from Gabe: our new windows will be installed tomorrow!! These include the living room, kitchen, and bathroom, which is in by far the worst shape. Now, if we can just figure out how to restore that bedroom window....
